What to Wear for Holi: Which Sarees Survive the Colour
Holi:
which sarees survive.
What to wear for Holi: handloom cottons and prints that survive the colour, what to keep away from it, and what to put on for the get-together afterwards.
Holi is the one festival where your best saree is the wrong choice. If you are working out what to wear for Holi, the trick is to dress for the colour, protect what matters, and save the pretty things for after the wash.
What to wear for Holi: play clothes and party clothes
Holi is really two occasions. There is Holika Dahan, the bonfire the evening before, and Rangwali Holi, the day of colour. Then, usually, a get-together in the afternoon or evening once everyone has washed up. When people ask what to wear for Holi, the honest answer is to plan for each part separately: something you are happy to ruin for the colour, and something clean and cheerful for what comes after.
Sarees that survive the colour
For the colour itself, think “old, cotton, and busy.” Washable handloom cottons take colour and washing far better than silk, and busy block prints and tie-dyes hide stains. Wear a dark petticoat, pin the pleats and the pallu firmly, and keep your best saree for later. Here is how the options compare.
White is the classic Holi colour, and it looks wonderful for the first ten minutes. If you wear a white saree, expect it to become a colour canvas, and choose a cotton you do not mind retiring.
Before you step outside
Oil your hair and skin lightly before you go out, since it makes colour easier to wash off. Wear a fitted blouse, a dark petticoat, and a few extra safety pins, and tuck the pallu firmly at the waist. Tie your hair back and skip heavy jewellery. A saree for this kind of day should be comfortable enough to run, hug, and sit on the ground in.
Looking good for the Holi get-together
Once you are clean and dry, Holi becomes a social day: family lunch, neighbours, sweets. This is when to wear something light and bright. Pastels and fresh festive colours suit the spring season, and a soft Chanderi or cotton-silk keeps you comfortable through a long afternoon. Our guides to blouse designs for handloom sarees and jewellery to wear with a saree help you pull it together.
How to save a coloured saree
Act fast: rinse the saree in cold, running water as soon as you can, before the colour dries. Do not rub or scrub. Soak it briefly in cold water with a mild detergent, wash it separately, and dry it in the shade. Our handloom saree care guide covers washing handloom in more detail. If a stain stays, do not keep scrubbing; a gentle repeat wash is kinder to the fabric.
