What to Wear for Navratri: A Handloom Saree Guide
Navratri:
nine nights, nine colours.
What to wear for Navratri, from the first day’s orange to the last night’s peacock green — puja mornings, garba evenings, and the grand finale. Here’s how to plan it without owning nine sarees.
Navratri comes with a built-in dress code — a colour for every day — and the quickest way to feel overwhelmed by it is to treat it as nine separate shopping trips. What to wear for Navratri gets much simpler once you stop thinking in nine outfits and start thinking in three moods.
What to wear for Navratri: nine colours, three moods
Sharad Navratri runs from 11 to 19 October this year, with Dussehra on 20 October. Each day is traditionally linked to a colour, and the sequence most calendars follow for 2026 runs like this (some sources and regions vary slightly, so go with whichever your family follows):
- 11 Oct: orange · 12 Oct: white · 13 Oct: red
- 14 Oct: royal blue · 15 Oct: yellow · 16 Oct: green
- 17 Oct: grey · 18 Oct: purple · 19 Oct: peacock green
You don’t need nine sarees to follow it. Most people group the nine nights into three kinds of occasion, and dress for the occasion first and the colour second.
Puja, garba, and the finale
Wear it as an accent rather than the whole saree — a dupatta, a blouse, a border, or just bangles and a bindi in the day’s colour. It keeps the tradition without forcing you into a shade you don’t like.
Fewer sarees, more nights
If you’re working out what to wear for Navratri on a modest budget, start with two base sarees — a white or off-white handloom, and a red one — and change the blouse, dupatta, and jewellery to pick up each day’s colour. Orange, yellow, and green sit well against white; purple, blue, and grey are easy accents to add through a blouse or stole. It’s the same idea as building one saree into several looks, and it costs a fraction of nine new pieces.
Navratri and Durga Puja overlap
Durga Puja falls on 16 to 21 October, right inside the Navratri window, so a lot of people are working out what to wear for Navratri and Durga Puja at the same time. If that’s you, our Durga Puja guide covers the Bengali side of the week, and the same few sarees can usually serve both.
With the festival days away, ask us on WhatsApp which pieces are ready to go — anything woven to order won’t make it for this Navratri, but it will be there for the next festival on the calendar.
