Is a Linen Saree Handloom? How to Tell
Is a linen saree handloom?
Is a linen saree handloom? A short, honest answer on what linen is, when it counts as handloom, and how to check before you buy.
Linen sarees are popular in summer, and the question we hear most is whether they are really handloom. The answer depends on how the cloth was woven, not on the fibre.
Is a linen saree handloom? Sometimes
Linen is a fibre, made from the flax plant, not a way of weaving. So whether a linen saree is handloom depends entirely on how the cloth was woven. Handwoven linen sarees exist, and some of the best come from weaving clusters such as Bhagalpur in Bihar, but a large share of linen sarees sold today are woven on power looms. If you are asking whether a linen saree is handloom, the honest reply is to ask the seller, and to check the signs below.
Two questions, not one
To decide whether a linen saree is handloom, separate the fibre from the method. Is it real linen, or a linen-cotton blend, or a viscose that is sold as “linen-look”? And is it handwoven, or woven by machine? A saree can be pure linen and power-loomed, or a blend and handwoven. Each answer changes the price and the feel. Many sarees sold as linen are in fact a cotton-linen blend, which is not bad, but it should be described that way.
Is it pure linen or a blend? Is it handwoven? Where was it woven, and by whom? A genuine seller can answer all three, and may even name the cluster or the weaver.
Signs of handwoven linen
Real linen has natural slubs: small thickenings in the thread that give it a lively texture. It feels crisp, gets softer with every wash, and creases easily, which is part of its character. A handwoven piece often shows slight irregularities in the weave and an uneven selvedge. A perfectly even, shiny, or very soft fabric may be a viscose or a polyester blend. The burn test is less helpful here, because linen burns much like cotton, with a paper-like smell and soft ash, so it cannot separate linen from cotton. What to expect and how it wears
Is a linen saree handloom worth the extra? Handwoven linen costs more than powerloom linen because it takes time on the loom. Our handloom saree price guide explains how to read a price against the weave. Linen is cool and breathable, so it is a good summer choice, and it holds a crisp drape that suits work and daytime events. Like all fine handloom, it needs gentle care, and a little creasing is normal. Our guide to wearing a saree to work and summer wedding guest guide suggest where it shines.
